What a beautiful explanation is forwarded by Ibn Al Qayyam, when he wrote some expensive words for ONIONS.

What a miracle onions can be, use them for removing warts, for curing dog bites, jaundice, piles, Vitiligo, for hair loss, as nose drops for clearing the head, as eye drops (with honey) for cataract, & as ear drops for a better hearing, onion water is good for taking out pus & water from the ears & helps in cases of Tinnitus (sensation of ringing / whistling sound in the ears).

Abu Dawood narrated in his Sunan that Aishah Radi Allaho Anha was asked about Basal (onion) and she said, “The last meal that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam had included onions in it”.

In the Sahihain, it is narrated that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam disallowed those who eat onions from entering the Masjid.

Basal is hot in the third degree and has an excess wetness, helps against pollution and prevents hot wind (meaning in the stomach). It excites the sexual drive, strengthens the stomach, helps semen production, makes the color lighter, dissolves the phlegm and cleanses the stomach.

Onion seeds help against Vitiligo (lack of pigment in certain areas of the skin) and are used as an ointment around the area affected by Alopecia (a skin disease characterized by loss of hair, partial or total). Furthermore, warts will dissipate effectively when onions are blended with salt (and used as an ointment on the warts). When someone feels nauseous after taking a laxative, smelling onions will help against vomiting. In addition, onion will dissipate the smell of laxatives, and when onion water (extract) is administered through the nose, it will clear the head. Used as ear drops; onion extract helps against weak hearing, Tinnitus, pus and water that accumulates in the ear. Onion seeds are used (as an eyeliner) to dry out the water that attacks the eye, i.e. cataracts, when the seeds are crushed & blended with honey and used on the white part of the eye.

Cooked onions are nutritious and help against jaundice, coughing and roughness in the chest. It is also a diuretic and relaxes the bowels. It also heals dog bites when its water (extract) is blended with salt and Rue and squeezed on the affected area. Finally, it will open the orifices of the hemorrhoids when used as suppository.

But onions also cause migraines, headaches, flatulence and bring darkness to the sight.

Eating onions in excessive amounts or regularly causes forgetfulness, affects the mind and changes the odor of the mouth and the taste of food. It also bothers those in your presence and the angels. Cooking onions dissipates these side effects of the onion. The Sunan narrated:

“Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam ordered those who eat onion and garlic to kill them (make them milder) by cooking”.

Science & Hadees regarding onion

1. In Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم time mostly people were poor, in Arab much vegetables did not grew, vegetables from other parts of the world were not very time available, people use to eat raw onion very often & we all know that it has a very offensive smell in breath which irritates other people, & Prophet did not strictly prohibited to eat, but allowed to eat it in cooked food, & prohibited to come in Masjid or near it with its smell in breath, because in Masjid there are angles, who also get irritated with its smell, And by this rule all bad smell things should be avoided in Masjid or near it. The people often use to come in Masud with its smell in breath, may be people ate raw onion in much quantity to fulfill their hunger, & it is seen that the bad smell is very offensive if raw onion is eaten in much quantity & remains for very long in the breath & also its smell is found in sweating which is again bad. And also cause excessive unwanted gas formation & its expulsion & if this occurs in public it is thing of irritating for others.

 2. Today no body eats onion raw enough or full stomach because today we have all types of vegetables available all season thus onion remains an ingredient of food. Thought its medicinal properties are not neglected.

Adverse effects and toxicology

3. If excessive raw onion is used some people may suffer from allergic reactions & also after handling onions. Symptoms can include contact dermatitis, intense itching, rhinoconjunctivitis, blurred vision, bronchial asthma, sweating and anaphylaxis. The toxicity is caused by the sulfoxides present in raw onions, causing ingestion resulting in anaemia caused by the distortion and rupture of red blood cells. (This is based on an animal’s research done by using onion.

Conclusion of Hadees

1. Do not come in Masjid or in public after eating raw vegetables whose bad smell comes from mouth. We can eat them cooked in food & bad smell should not come from mouth. Nabi صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم did not liked bad smell, specially from mouth because Angle use to come to Him bringing Messages & Quranic verses from Allah & Angles get irritated by te bad smell even people get irritated.
